The important distinction is that Thunder Junction is more than just the OTJ-numbered cards. Play Boosters can contain cards from OTJ, Breaking News, The Big Score, and Special Guests, making the overall release considerably larger than the main set alone.

What Is Thunder Junction?

Thunder Junction is a new plane in the Magic multiverse and serves as the setting for Outlaws of Thunder Junction. The world combines traditional Western imagery with Magic’s fantasy elements, creating a frontier populated by gunslingers, rogues, legendary creatures, and characters who arrived through the Multiverse’s Omenpaths.

The story centers on Oko, the Ringleader, who assembles a group of notorious characters for a major heist. Wizards of the Coast describes Thunder Junction as Magic’s first Western-themed set, making its setting notably different from the gothic, Phyrexian, or urban environments featured in several preceding expansions.

That setting isn’t simply cosmetic. The mechanics, card treatments, Commander decks, and even the reprint bonus sheet were designed around the outlaw and Western themes.

Thunder Junction Card Set

The main Outlaws of Thunder Junction set uses the OTJ set code.

According to Wizards of the Coast’s official collecting guide, the main set contains:

  • 81 commons
  • 100 uncommons
  • 60 rares
  • 20 mythic rares
  • 5 basic land designs with three unique variations each
  • 54 art cards

This gives the core OTJ card pool a substantial amount of content before accounting for the additional Thunder Junction subsets.

For collectors, however, stopping at the OTJ checklist misses some of the most distinctive cards associated with the release.

The Big Score

The Big Score, identified by the BIG set code, contains 30 mythic rare cards. The cards represent treasures connected to Oko’s heist and are integrated into the wider Thunder Junction release.

The Big Score is particularly important for anyone researching Thunder Junction cards because these cards aren’t simply random bonus cards. They form a dedicated subset with their own set symbol and collector identity.

Breaking News

Breaking News, with the OTP set code, is a 65-card bonus sheet of reprints.

It contains:

  • 20 uncommons
  • 30 rares
  • 15 mythic rares

Every Breaking News card represents a spell associated with the set’s crime theme. The cards receive a newspaper-inspired presentation that makes them visually distinct from their original printings.

A Breaking News card appears in every Outlaws of Thunder Junction Play Booster.

Some of the reprints are also available in traditional foil, while the 15 mythic rare Breaking News cards have textured foil versions.

Special Guests

The release also includes 10 Special Guests cards.

These are reprints featuring new artwork designed around Thunder Junction. The Special Guests cards use the SPG set code and can appear in Play Boosters and Collector Boosters.

The result is a set that has substantially more collecting depth than the basic OTJ checklist suggests.

Thunder Junction Mechanics

The best way to understand the set is through its mechanics. Several of them reinforce the central idea of playing as an outlaw or committing crimes on the frontier.

Outlaws

Thunder Junction defines outlaws as creatures belonging to one or more of five creature types:

  • Assassin
  • Mercenary
  • Pirate
  • Rogue
  • Warlock

This matters because many cards specifically reward you for controlling, casting, or interacting with outlaws.

Instead of creating a completely new creature type, Wizards uses existing creature types to create a broad mechanical group. That allows cards from older sets to interact with Thunder Junction’s outlaw-focused strategies.

Committing a Crime

Crime is one of the defining concepts of Thunder Junction.

A player commits a crime when a spell or ability they control targets at least one opponent, something an opponent controls, or a card in an opponent’s graveyard.

That means ordinary interaction can become strategically valuable when other cards reward you for committing crimes.

The mechanic fits the setting extremely well: stealing resources, disrupting opponents, destroying permanents, and targeting cards in graveyards all feel like actions an outlaw might take.

Spree

Spree gives modal spells additional flexibility.

A Spree spell has multiple modes, and you can choose more than one mode when casting it. Each selected mode has its own additional cost.

This makes Spree cards useful in different situations because you aren’t forced to choose a single predetermined effect. The tradeoff is that selecting more modes requires paying more mana or other specified costs.

Plot

Plot allows certain spells to be exiled for their plot cost and then cast later without paying their mana cost.

This creates an unusual timing decision: you can invest resources now to prepare a spell for a future turn.

Plot also reinforces the set’s feeling of planning a heist. Instead of immediately deploying every spell, players can prepare powerful effects for later.

Mount and Saddle

Thunder Junction also introduces Mount creatures and the Saddle mechanic.

Saddling a Mount generally requires tapping other creatures whose total power meets the required saddle value. Once saddled, the Mount can receive a particular benefit, often connected to attacking or another ability.

This gives creatures that might otherwise remain passive a reason to work together.

The mechanic also fits the Western setting without being purely cosmetic.

Thunder Junction Commander Decks

Outlaws of Thunder Junction launched with four Commander decks:

  1. Quick Draw — Blue/Red
  2. Desert Bloom — Red/Green/White
  3. Grand Larceny — Blue/Black/Green
  4. Most Wanted — White/Black/Red

Each deck contains 100 cards and introduces 10 cards that were new to Magic.

Quick Draw

Quick Draw focuses on spellslinging and casting instants and sorceries.

Its face commander is Stella Lee, Wild Card, making the deck a natural fit for players who enjoy building value through repeated spellcasting.

Desert Bloom

Desert Bloom takes a different direction, focusing heavily on lands and landfall-style strategies.

Its face commander is Yuma, Proud Protector, and the deck includes a substantial number of cards designed around lands, deserts, and land-based value.

Grand Larceny

Grand Larceny is built around stealing and using opponents’ resources.

Its face commander is Gonti, Canny Acquisitor, making it one of the most obvious expressions of Thunder Junction’s theft and outlaw themes.

Most Wanted

Most Wanted focuses on the Jund-adjacent Mardu colors of white, black, and red, with a strategy built around creating and using Treasures, attacking, and taking advantage of outlaw-style gameplay.

Its face commander is Olivia, Opulent Outlaw.

The Bounty Mechanic in Commander

Thunder Junction Commander introduced a new minigame called Bounties.

Bounty cards are placed into a shared bounty deck. Each bounty describes a condition that a player can satisfy to capture the target and receive a reward.

The reward becomes better if nobody claims the bounty immediately.

Wizards’ rules explain that bounty cards begin appearing on the starting player’s third turn. Rewards increase through four levels, with the highest level offering two Treasure tokens and a card.

This system gives Commander games another objective beyond simply reducing opponents’ life totals.

It also fits the theme better than a generic alternate win condition would. Players are literally hunting targets for rewards.

Thunder Junction Booster Products

Wizards released several products around the set.

Play Boosters

Play Boosters were designed for both Limited play and normal booster opening.

Each Play Booster contains 14 cards plus a token/ad card or art card. The pack can contain cards from several Thunder Junction subsets, including Breaking News and cards from The List.

Notably, every Play Booster contains a Breaking News card.

Collector Boosters

Collector Boosters target collectors and contain a higher concentration of foils and special card treatments.

The official product information describes them as containing five cards of rare or higher rarity, along with special treatments and foil cards.

They are therefore more appropriate for collectors chasing alternate-art, borderless, extended-art, wanted-poster, and other premium versions.

The standard Thunder Junction Bundle includes:

  • 9 Play Boosters
  • 1 Bundle-exclusive traditional foil promo
  • 15 traditional foil basic lands
  • 15 non-foil basic lands
  • A spindown life counter
  • Storage box

The land package includes Western landscape basic lands.

Thunder Junction Card Legality

One area where Thunder Junction can become confusing is format legality.

The main OTJ cards and The Big Score (BIG) cards were introduced as Standard-legal cards. The other associated subsets have different legality rules.

The relevant set codes are:

  • OTJ — Outlaws of Thunder Junction
  • BIG — The Big Score
  • OTP — Breaking News
  • SPG — Special Guests
  • OTC — Outlaws of Thunder Junction Commander

However, legality should always be checked against the current format rules rather than relying on the original release-day Standard list. Formats such as Standard change over time through rotation and subsequent banned-and-restricted announcements.

For historical research, the release notes are particularly useful because they document how the cards were treated when the set launched.

Why Thunder Junction Is Different

The biggest strength of Outlaws of Thunder Junction is that the theme actually affects the mechanics.

A weaker Western-themed set could have simply changed the artwork and called ordinary fantasy characters “cowboys.” Thunder Junction goes further by connecting the setting to crimes, outlaws, bounties, mounts, treasure, heists, and flexible spellcasting.

The release structure is also unusual.

A player opening an OTJ Play Booster isn’t necessarily seeing only the main OTJ card file. They can encounter Breaking News, The Big Score, and Special Guests cards as well.

That makes the set appealing to both players and collectors, but it also makes collecting a complete Thunder Junction release more complicated.

Is Outlaws of Thunder Junction Worth Collecting?

For collectors, Thunder Junction has several attractive features.

The Western setting gives the cards a recognizable identity, while treatments such as wanted posters, Breaking News, borderless cards, Western landscape lands, textured foils, and Special Guests provide multiple collecting targets.

For players, the set offers several distinct archetypes rather than one single strategy. Outlaw synergies, crime triggers, Spree spells, Plot cards, Mounts, and land-focused strategies give Limited and Commander players different ways to approach the set.

But buying sealed product simply because a set contains “valuable cards” is a poor collecting strategy. Most cards in any large Magic release will not become expensive collectibles. If the objective is financial value, individual card prices, supply, demand, tournament relevance, reprint risk, and long-term collector interest matter far more than the set’s theme.

If the objective is actually enjoying the set, Thunder Junction is much easier to justify: the setting is distinctive, the mechanics are coherent, and the release contains enough different card treatments to give collectors plenty to chase.
